Established in 1994 as General Wireless, Metro PCS later changed its name to affirm its market position of serving inner city customers. Now the sixth largest wireless telephone and data provider in the country, Metro PCS joined T-Mobile in a 2012 merger. The unification of the two organizations provided for sharing of T-Mobile's 4G LTE network while retaining Metro PCS' own brand identity. This merge also enables community-driven Metro PCS to compete more effectively with top cellular service providers and carriers from coast-to-coast. As a downside to this deal, Metro PCS customers are considered secondary to T-Mobile customers in use of the 4G network. This means that Metro PCS users are often relegated to 3G-quality mobile speeds during times of heavy cellular traffic. There are periods when Metro PCS customer data speeds are half those of T-Mobile's customers.
In lieu of contracts, Metro PCS serves its customers through prepaid wireless and a "pay as you go" system
Parent brand T-Mobile is traded on the New York Stock Exchange, although Metro PCS is not directly traded
With annual revenue growing at eight percent per year for the past five years, T-Mobile has adopted use of the slogan, "Everybody's moving to Metro" in support of joint-branding and affirmation of improving market position
Almost 9.5 million customers are served by Metro PCS, with the organization employing approximately 4,000 workers nationwide
